How We Can Accomplish Same-Day Crowns With a CEREC Machine

Aug 25, 2020 · Filed under Technology

We’re so excited to add this service to our toolbelt: CEREC-created crown! Now, you can come in with a tooth issue and leave with a fully repaired smile on the same day!

CEREC (chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics, or ceramic reconstruction) machines are used to take impressions of your teeth and generate a precisely-fitted crown with CAD (computer-aided design) technology. At Carney Family Dental, we have the CEREC Primescan, the best technology in the nation, available to our patients. It makes intraoral scanning quicker, easier, and more comfortable than ever before, since it’s immediately ready to use and quickly processed.

Another piece of top-of-the-line tech is the MC XL, which actually creates the crown. It takes a block of ceramic material and, with simultaneously working, double 4-axis machining, grinds it down at incredibly high speed into a perfectly sculpted tooth or crown.

Now that we have the definitions and technology out of the way, here’s how it benefits you!

Normally, if you need a crown, it’s a two-trip, multi-week process. Your first visit includes prepping the tooth, taking an impression, and adding a temporary restoration to your affected tooth. At that point, the impression is sent off so your crown can be created.

In a couple of weeks, you head in for your second appointment so your dentist can remove the temporary fix and place the permanent crown.

This process takes up your valuable time. We wanted to change that. Now, with Carney Family Dental’s new CEREC machine, you can get your teeth restored in one trip!

How does it work?

CEREC machines make creating a crown quick and easy, but we’re also making the whole process more efficient with digital imaging. Everything starts with an examination and x-rays, to see exactly what the damage looks like, and how we can best fix your smile. Once we’ve determined that you’re a candidate for a crown, we prep the tooth, take a digital impression (that means no goo or mess!), and then the digital impression is sent to the milling machine right here in our office.

Some folks may worry that since a crown won’t be created in a lab, it won’t be as resilient. No worries! The CEREC machine uses the same kind of technology in dental labs. Each new tooth is created from a solid block of ceramic materials and can last for years. The milling process is similar to a sculptor chipping away marble, but it’s even more precise than human hands. On top of that, the color of CEREC ceramic is incredibly similar to the color of your natural teeth, so any restorations are almost unnoticeable. Of course, the last part may be the most important: we can place these crowns same-day! You can walk in our office with pain and discomfort and leave with a beautiful, repaired smile just a couple of hours later.
