Routine cleanings and checkups are necessary to keep your smile, your heart, and your overall health as good as possible.

The American Dental Association recommends that you visit your family dentist twice each year for a cleaning and exam, in order to maintain the healthiest teeth and gums possible. These regular visits can help us catch potential problems earlier, as well as make your teeth cleaning easier and as pain-free as possible too.

During these appointments, we will not only clean your teeth, but will also examine your mouth for any indications of oral cancer, diabetes, or vitamin deficiencies. Other things we will look for include:

  • Checking your bite
  • Looking for visual evidence of tooth decay
  • Checking for broken teeth
  • Checking for damaged fillings
  • Looking for changes in the gums covering teeth
  • Evaluating any dental appliance you have
  • Checking the contact between your teeth

Sometimes dental X-rays are necessary to help in these evaluations and are generally recommended once a year to allow us to thoroughly examine what cannot be seen inside and in between the teeth and bone.

A Fresh Start

After a thorough examination, we will clean and polish your teeth, by removing any built-up plaque and tartar and flossing between your teeth. This deep clean can help remove stains, freshen your breath, and give you a new start on oral hygiene for the next six months! If you have any questions about best brushing or flossing practices, be sure to ask us during your cleaning for our suggestions!

Daily Home Care

Of course, these dental visits every six months are only effective if you also practice good hygiene at home. It’s important to continue brushing your teeth at least two times a day, flossing once a day, and making healthy lifestyle choices. Drinking plenty of water, limiting sugary foods, and replacing your toothbrush every three to four months are all ways that can help keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape. And when it’s time for your biannual dental visit, you’re sure to get a “Well Done!” from us too.
